When leaves fall off a plant, microorganisms like bacteria and fungi break them down. These microorganisms respire and release carbon from the dead leaves as carbon dioxide into the air.
Plants then take in this carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and use it to make glucose. The glucose is used to make things like amino acids, proteins, and cellulose, which help the plant grow new leaves.
