Calcium carbonate thermally decomposes to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. CaCO3 → CaO + CO2 Calculate the mass of calcium carbonate needed to make 209g of calcium oxide. (A r: Ca = 40.1, C = 12.0, O = 16.0). Give your answer to 3 significant figures. Mass of calcium carbonate – 7554

Q1.

Calcium carbonate thermally decomposes to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide.

CaCO3 → CaO + CO2

Calculate the mass of calcium carbonate needed to make 209g of calcium oxide.

 (A r: Ca = 40.1, C = 12.0, O = 16.0).

Give your answer to 3 significant figures.

  1. Mr of CaCO₃ = 100.1 and Mr of CaO = 56.1
    Mass of CaCO₃ = 100.1 / 56.1×209=372.92 g
    To 3 significant figures = 373 g
