  1. Structure:
    Xylem is made of dead cells; phloem is made of living cells.
    Phloem has pores in the end walls; xylem does not.
    Xylem is hollow with no cytoplasm; phloem has cytoplasm.
    Xylem has lignin to make it strong; phloem does not.
    Both are made of cells and are tube-shaped.
    Function:
    Xylem carries water and minerals from roots upwards.
    Phloem carries sugars from leaves to other parts.
    Xylem works in one direction (up only).
    Phloem works in both directions.
    Both move substances around the plant.
