  1. Place one rock in front of the detector tube (but not inside it), then do the same with the second rock, making sure to keep them apart.

    Measure the count rate separately for each rock using a Geiger-Muller tube.

    Make sure to measure the counts for the same amount of time for both rocks, for example, 1 minute.

    Keep the distance between the detector and each rock the same when measuring.

    Measure the background radiation without any rocks and subtract this from each result.

    Repeat each measurement a few times and take an average to get more reliable results.
