A measurement should first be taken without the radioactive source to find the background radiation level.
The radioactive source is then placed in front of or near the detector, and the distance between the source and detector is measured using a ruler or measuring tape.
A reading is taken from the counter or screen over a fixed period of time, and the same time should be used for each count to keep the test fair.
The distance between the source and detector is then increased step by step, and readings are repeated until the count rate returns to a background level or constant value.
