Sexual Reproduction
Advantages:
Creates genetic variation in the species.
Some individuals may survive better under selection pressure (e.g. disease, climate change).
Allows evolution to happen over time through natural selection.
Disadvantages:
Needs two parents, so a mate must be found, which takes time and energy.
Takes longer due to fertilisation or pollination.
Offspring may inherit less useful traits than their parents.
Asexual Reproduction
Advantages:
No need to find a mate, so reproduction is quicker and easier.
Very fast reproductive cycle.
Produces offspring with exact same beneficial traits as the parent.
Disadvantages:
No genetic variation – all offspring are clones.
If the environment changes or there is a disease, all individuals can be affected because they are genetically the same.
