  1. A synapse is a small gap between two neurones. When an electrical impulse travels along the first neurone and reaches the end, it stimulates the release of a chemical from the neurone. This chemical is called a neurotransmitter.

    The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synapse, moving from the end of the first neurone to the membrane of the second neurone. When it reaches the next neurone, the neurotransmitter binds to receptors on its surface. This causes the second neurone to be stimulated, and a new electrical impulse is triggered in the second neurone.

    This process allows the message to be passed from one neurone to another across the synapse.
