  1. Seismometers are used to detect seismic waves that travel through the Earth.

    Some seismic waves are longitudinal (P waves) and some are transverse (S waves).

    S waves cannot pass through liquid, but P waves can, which helps scientists understand the structure of the Earth.

    Waves get refracted as they travel through different layers, showing that the Earth has different densities inside.
