  1. The retina contains two types of light-sensitive cells: rods and cones.

    Rods are responsible for vision in dim light. They are very sensitive to light but cannot detect colour, so they help us see in black and white at night or in the dark.

    Cones work in bright light and are responsible for detecting colour. There are three types of cones, each sensitive to red, green, or blue light. Cones help us see sharp, detailed, and coloured images in daylight.

    Together, rods and cones send signals to the brain through the optic nerve, allowing us to see in different lighting conditions.
