  1. When you exercise, your heart rate goes up to pump more blood to the muscles and lungs, so they get more oxygen and glucose, and waste like carbon dioxide is removed faster. Your breathing rate also increases so more oxygen gets into the blood and more carbon dioxide is breathed out. Muscles need the extra oxygen for respiration to release the energy for them to contract. If there’s not enough oxygen, anaerobic respiration happens, which makes lactic acid build up. This causes oxygen debt and can lead to muscle pain or tiredness.
