  1. When the concentration gradient of oxygen is shallower, it means there is less difference in oxygen levels between the water and the axolotl’s blood.

    As a result, less oxygen is able to diffuse into the axolotl’s blood, cells, or gills.
    In some cases, if the oxygen level in the water is really low, oxygen might even diffuse out of the axolotl’s blood, because the concentration gradient is reversed.

    Because less oxygen is entering the body, less aerobic respiration takes place in the cells.
    This means that less energy is released for the axolotl to use, since aerobic respiration is the main process that releases energy.

    Alternatively, the axolotl may rely more on anaerobic respiration, but this still produces less energy compared to aerobic respiration.
