  1. Some bacteria in the population may have a mutation or genetic variation that makes them resistant to antibiotics. This means they are not killed when people take antibiotics like Colistin.

    If someone does not finish their full course of antibiotics, the bacteria that are resistant can survive the treatment. The non-resistant bacteria are killed, but the resistant ones stay alive.

    These resistant bacteria then reproduce or divide and make more bacteria with the same resistance. The resistance is passed on to their offspring.

    Over time, through natural selection or evolution, more bacteria in the population become resistant. This makes it harder to treat infections in the future.
