Q1.

Propane burns to form carbon dioxide and water.

The equation for the reaction is:

C3H8(g) + 5 O2(g) → 3 CO2(g) + 4 H2O(l)

3.60 dm3 carbon dioxide is produced when a sample of propane is burned in 7.25 dm3 oxygen. Calculate the volume of unreacted oxygen. Give your answer in cm3 ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________

  1. The mole ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide is 5:3, so for every 3 parts of CO₂, 5 parts of O₂ are needed.

I was given that 3.60 dm³ of CO₂ is made, so I calculated the oxygen needed:
    3.60 × 5/3 = 6.0 dm³ of O₂

The amount of oxygen actually used was 7.25 dm³, so I worked out the oxygen left over:

    7.25 − 6.0 = 1.25 dm³

Finally, I converted 1.25 dm³ to cm³:

    1.25 × 1000= 1250 cm³

So, 1250 cm³ of oxygen was unreacted.
