Q1.

Propane burns to form carbon dioxide and water.

The equation for the reaction is:

C3H8(g) + 5 O2(g) → 3 CO2(g) + 4 H2O(l)

3.60 dm3 carbon dioxide is produced when a sample of propane is burned in 7.25 dm3 oxygen. Calculate the volume of unreacted oxygen.

Give your answer in cm3

  1. The relative molecular mass (Mr) of Al₂O₃ is 204.

204 kg of Al₂O₃ produces 96 kg of O₂.

To find how much oxygen 2000 kg of Al₂O₃ produces:
    2000/204×96=941 kg of O2.

  2. The ratio of O₂ to CO₂ is 5 : 3

    Calculate oxygen needed
    3.60×5/3=6.0dm^3
Oxygen unreacted = total oxygen – oxygen needed =
    7.25−6.0=1.25dm3
    Convert oxygen unreacted to cm³:
    1.25×1000=1250cm3
