Q1
Sodium reacts with oxygen to produce the ionic compound sodium oxide.
Oxygen is a Group 6 element.
Draw a dot and cross diagram to show what happens when atoms of
sodium and oxygen react to produce sodium oxide.

A sodium atom has one electron in its outer shell, and an oxygen atom has six electrons in its outer shell. Two sodium atoms each lose one electron and give them to the oxygen atom.
This makes two Na⁺ ions and one O²⁻ ion.
The sodium ions now have full outer shells and a +1 charge, and the oxygen ion has a full outer shell and a -2 charge.
The diagram shows this using dots for sodium’s electrons and crosses for oxygen’s electrons.
