Describe a method to make pure, dry crystals of magnesium sulfate from a

metal oxide and a dilute acid

    First, pour some sulfuric acid into a beaker.

    Warm the acid gently to help the reaction happen faster (but don’t boil it).

    Then, add a small amount of magnesium oxide to the acid.

    Stir the mixture with a glass rod.

    Keep adding magnesium oxide a bit at a time and stir.

    Stop adding when some magnesium oxide stays at the bottom – this means all the acid has reacted.

    Filter the mixture using filter paper and a funnel to remove the extra (unreacted) magnesium oxide.

    Pour the clear solution into an evaporating basin.

    Heat it gently until some water has evaporated and the solution becomes concentrated (crystallisation point).

    Leave it to cool and form crystals.

    Finally, remove the crystals and pat them dry using filter paper.
