The diagram shows four groups of stars. The surface temperature and relative luminosity determine which group a star is in. A star with a relative luminosity of 1 emits the same amount of energy every second as the Sun. At different points in their lifecycle stars change from one group to another. Describe what will happen to the Sun between it leaving the main sequence group and becoming a white dwarf. The Sun starts as a main sequence star. It then turns into a red giant. When this happens, the Sun’s surface temperature gets lower, but its brightness (luminosity) goes up. After this, it becomes a white dwarf. When changing from a red giant to a white dwarf, the surface temperature goes up again, but the brightness goes down.
