  1. Sometimes a mutation happens in a bird’s DNA by chance.
    This changes a protein in the retina, so the bird can see UV light.
    Birds that can see UV can spot fruits that reflect UV and see signs of small mammals.
    This means they can find more food and avoid predators.
    They survive better and have more chicks.
    The UV-seeing gene gets passed on, and over many generations more birds can see UV.
