The overall equation for the electrolysis of aluminium oxide is: 2 Al2O3 → 4 Al + 3 O2 Calculate the mass of oxygen produced when 2000 kg of aluminium oxide is completely electrolysed. Relative atomic masses (Ar): O = 16 Al = 27 – 6126

Q1.

The overall equation for the electrolysis of aluminium oxide is:

2 Al2O3 → 4 Al + 3 O2

Calculate the mass of oxygen produced when 2000 kg of aluminium oxide

is completely electrolysed.

Relative atomic masses (Ar): O = 16 Al = 27

  1. The Mr of 2Al₂O₃ is 204.
This means 204 kg of aluminium oxide gives 96 kg of oxygen.
So for 2000 kg of Al₂O₃,
    2000/204×96=941 kg of oxygen
    941 kg of O₂
