  1. Method 1 uses carbon and iron, which are cheap reactants, but it has some problems. Tungsten needs to be separated from tungsten carbide, which takes time and costs money. Also, some tungsten is lost as tungsten carbide, and the carbon dioxide made will escape as a gas.

    Method 2 uses hydrogen, which is the most expensive reactant. But it’s better in some ways because the water vapour escapes and there are no solid products to separate, which saves time and money.

    Method 3 also uses cheap reactants like carbon and iron, but tungsten has to be separated from iron oxide, which can be expensive and time-consuming.
